ReadingQuest.org started out as a simple class project under Professor Thomas H. Estes at the University of Virginia in 1998, and since then it has evolved into an extensive reading and comprehension strategies resource for teachers. My goal was to offer teachers not only free and accessible materials but to help guide them in a way of thinking about teaching that is more strategic and student-centered.
I began my career in education as a middle and high school social studies teacher in North Carolina, and I've taught in rural, inner-city, and suburban schools. While working with the very excellent Stephanie Toney at Leesville Road Middle School, we were chosen as the North Carolina Middle School Association Team of the Year for our region. My PhD came from the University of Virginia, for whom I continue to teach classes mostly in reading and instruction. For six years, I was the Director of Secondary Social Studies Education at Wake Forest University.
I have taught comprehension and content strategy workshops to K-12 teachers, district administrators, teacher education students, and university faculty from Virginia to California. I've had the good fortune to teach quite a few well-received sections of "Reading in the Content Areas" for the University of Virginia's graduate continuing education division. During my doctoral program, I also taught a masters-level social studies methods course and a graduate technology course, called "Academic Uses of the World Wide Web." Since 1993, I've been a trainer for Project CRISS: CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies and am one of only a handful of nationally certified Project CRISS trainers.
